LETTER FROM SAM MANDEL, COO
Dear Patients, Friends, & Colleagues,
Welcome to our gold edition. This month we celebrate….
To Crushing 2021!
Ketamine Infusion Therapy More Effective at Treating Depression Than Esketamine (SPRAVATO®)
“A new study analyzing the comparative efficacy and tolerability of racemic ketamine and esketamine (the ketamine-based nasal spray referred to as SPRAVATO®) for the treatment of depression has been released. The results show that racemic ketamine administered intravenously demonstrates greater overall response and remission from depression, change in depression severity, suicidality, retention in treatment, drop-outs, and drop-outs due to adverse events.” Read more
“Dr. Steven Mandel, Founder and President of Ketamine Clinics of Los Angeles, returns to the show, with Sam Mandel, Clinic Director. Dr. Mandel is a pioneer in the use of Ketamine to treat Depression, Suicidality, PTSD, and other psychological disorders. As a returning guest, he updates us on what has changed in the research and use of Ketamine over the past year, and we talk about the health impact that depression and suicide have in our society in general, and in the time of the COVID19 Pandemic.“ Listen Now
This Year, Try Downsizing Your Resolutions
“After the unpredictable, torrid year we’ve had, the idea of making New Year’s resolutions for 2021 might seem a tad overwhelming.
“I am keeping the bar so low,” the comedian Robyn Schall joked during an interview with The New York Times this month.
“No goals,” she said, laughing. “Just one day at a time.” Read more
HAPPY 2 YEAR ANNIVERSAY NURSE STEPHANIE!!!
Our nurse Stephanie has worked at KCLA for two years now. When she first joined us she was a part-time, then she became full-time, and then she took leave of absence to have our first ever KLCA baby! She is now back with her work family full-time and we are so grateful. She is known for being kind, gentle, caring, and so very patient. It doesn’t matter what challenges our team faces, Stephanie is always willing to jump in and help.
Thank you Stephanie for your contribution over the years. We are all excited and looking forward to another great year together!

“I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety for years and have tried more antidepressants than I can count. Most antidepressants only worked for me for a short period of time. Waiting the 3-4 weeks it takes for a new antidepressant to kick in made me fall into major depressive episodes. It was a long, bumpy trial and error process trying to figure out the best treatment for me, until I discovered ketamine. When I heard that ketamine was potentially the first antidepressant to act instantly, I immediately made an appointment. Alyssa who works at the front desk is super friendly and always remembers your name. She knows how to address every need you could possibly have on the check-in/paperwork/payment side of things. Denisse, Nicki, and Conor made me feel at ease right away in the infusion room. They have their system organized to a T and the process of getting hooked up to the IV is always smooth. Everyone there is so kind and friendly, they really take the time to develop a personal relationship with you, make sure you are comfortable, all your questions are answered, and to check in with you about your life. I initially signed up for a series of 6 infusions over 2 weeks. Now I go in for boosters once a month. Most of the infusions have been pleasant if not enjoyable! When I’ve gotten anxious they give me Ativan to calm me down. I’m prone to nausea as well, but the anti-nausea medication they give to me beforehand and after always does the trick. I like to get cozy with a blanket, a stuffed animal, an eye pillow, and music in the headphones. I bring my own but they provide pillows and blankets and eye masks. I keep my eyes closed the whole time. My usual experience is that my body goes numb and feels like it’s floating, or that it is an ocean of undulating waves. With my eyes closed, vivid imagery emerges out of the darkness and fades in and out between being incredibly well focused and real, to more abstract. I always have the sensation of flowing in a river, or riding on train tracks, or flying. It’s like when you look at a light and then close your eyes, and the impression of the light stays but is a different color. Then the color grows and morphs into anything you want, once you get good at controlling it. I’ve found that the actual dream-like experience of ketamine helps me get a better perspective on reality and even, on an existential level, our place in the universe. I always explore whimsical colorful places, but I am always aware I can open my eyes at any time and I will be back in the infusion room. When the infusion is over the dreams fade and they give me time to rest until I’m not too dizzy to walk. Ketamine is the only effective treatment I have found for my depression and I couldn’t recommend it more. I’ve tried other clinics but Ketamine Clinics Los Angeles is the absolute best I have visited. – Sophie
