Ketamine for Pain: CRPS & RSD
Managing chronic pain and the debilitating symptoms associated with conditions like Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) or Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) can be a challenge. While traditional therapies and modalities, such as high doses of narcotics and other medications, can help keep pain under control, most pain sufferers need ongoing treatment. Unfortunately, prescription drugs have many unwanted side effects and some patients become drug-resistant and/or addicted to opioids
Discover the benefits of Ketamine Treatment for Pain
Ketamine Infusion Therapy is a viable treatment option for managing chronic pain symptoms and may be especially effective for patients who have neuropathic pain, have become resistant to narcotics and other pain-relieving treatments, have developed central sensitization, or are unable or unwilling to pursue more traditional remedies.
What is CRPS (formerly RSD)?
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), formerly known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) is a rare and progressive form of chronic pain that affects a single limb but then spreads to other parts of the body. It usually develops after an injury or surgery, and the pain can be difficult to control.
Problems with the central nervous system and sympathetic nervous system can make the sensation of pain much stronger than the pain associated with the original injury. Common symptoms include a sensation of burning pain, motor disability, swelling and stiffness in the joints, and skin changes. This type of malfunctioning only worsens over time and there is currently no cure for CRPS.
CRPS is uncommon, and there is still a lot to learn about why it happens and how to effectively treat it. And while there is no way to definitively diagnose CRPS, bone scans, x-rays, MRIs, and sweat production tests can all be used to give doctors a better idea of what’s going on.

Treatment Options for CRPS or RSD
Getting relief from persistent pain and discomfort is the primary goal of CRPS treatment since there is currently no cure for this disorder. Nerve blocks can help minimize the sensation of pain and some people get temporary relief from spinal cord stimulation. Narcotics and other painkillers can also help to relieve symptoms in the short-term but are not without their side effects, including risk for addiction. Traditional therapies and treatments for CRPS include:
- Sympathetic nerve blocks
- Surgical sympathectomy to destroy nerves triggering CRPS symptoms
- Intrathecal drug pumps to deliver pain-relieving medication into spinal fluid
- Spinal cord stimulation
- Narcotics and other prescription pain relievers
Mother of PTSD and depression patient
I saw my son once again.
Although all the medical treatment Matt has received was valuable in some way, the only time in 16 years I saw the person who is my son once again quietly emerge, was after the ketamine infusions.

My successes have been phenomenal.
I have cut down on my Effexor to 75 Mg per day. I have eliminated lithium from my regiment and haven’t needed ambien for about month now to sleep. My klonopin I’ve reduced to once every other day. The infusions really helped my depression and chronic pain in my neck. My depression has never been better and I am cutting down on my other medications with great success. Thank you, thank you Dr. Mandel!

My doctor recommended that I try Ketamine
My doctor recommended that I try Ketamine at this time because he considers that there is now enough clinical information to make an informed decision about its effectiveness and side effects, and specifically recommended Dr. Mandel, who even with a glowing recommendation from someone for whom I have tremendous respect vastly exceeded all of my expectations.
Dr. Mandel has truly made my unlivable life, livable again.
Dr. Mandel has truly made my unlivable life, livable again. My ability to get out of bed early and or nearly right as I wake up has significantly improved. I’m able to keep up with my incredibly hectic schedule. My overall mood is high and lethargy is low. My social anxiety is at an all time low, and I haven’t had a panic attack since my first infusion.
