What is Ketamine Infusion Therapy?
Ketamine Infusion Therapy is a transformational treatment that can rapidly relieve symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mood disorders—often within hours. Originally approved by the FDA in 1970 as an anesthetic and recognized by the World Health Organization as an Essential Medicine since 1985, ketamine has since been prescribed off-label for its powerful mental health benefits.
At Ketamine Clinics Los Angeles (KCLA), we’ve been delivering this innovative care since 2014, providing over 35,000 infusions to more than 6,000 patients with an 83% success rate.
At carefully controlled, lower doses, ketamine can disrupt harmful thought patterns, reduce distressing symptoms, and help the brain form new, healthier connections, offering relief when other treatments have failed.
At KCLA, treatment typically involves a series of six intravenous (IV) ketamine infusions over a 2–3 week period, with each session lasting 50–55 minutes. We offer an accelerated protocol of 6 infusions over 8 days for travelers and those with scheduling limitations. Most patients also participate in our comprehensive preparation and integration program, which helps them set clear intentions, feel safe and supported, and apply insights from their journey in a meaningful way for lasting mental health and healing.
How Does Ketamine Treatment Work?
Ketamine has powerful, multi-layered effects on the brain and mind. Treatment can be understood through two distinct components: the experiential effects and the neurochemical effects.
Experiential Effects:
During treatment, ketamine induces a mild dissociative state that many patients describe as therapeutic, meditative, or even spiritual. This experience can disrupt rigid, negative thought patterns and open space for new perspectives. Positive shifts in mood, behavior, and outlook often begin during the infusion itself and can be sustained long after treatment is complete.
Neurochemical Effects:
One important mechanism is boosting levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which promotes growth in the prefrontal cortex, helps repair damaged cells, and creates new connections between neurons. This neuroplasticity supports lasting improvements in mood and function.
Ketamine also acts as an NMDA receptor antagonist, which increases glutamate production and stimulates AMPA receptors. Glutamate is a crucial neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation, and imbalances are often linked to depression and anxiety. By restoring healthy glutamate signaling, ketamine helps rebalance brain chemistry when traditional treatments have been ineffective.

Ketamine Therapy FAQs
General Questions
Mood disorder patients often get rapid results from ketamine infusion. When given through an intravenous infusion in a slow, controlled, and constant rate, ketamine has many highly therapeutic effects on the brain. Among them is the ability to cause physical growth in the brain’s prefrontal cortex, establishing new connections between neurons while repairing damaged cells. Ketamine causes an increase in neurotransmitters like glutamate that help to build new pathways in the brain, improving function in areas of mood, sleep, and more.
Pain patients often suffer from a process known as “central sensitization,” where pain signals increase in frequency and intensity over time. Ketamine acts to reset pain receptors and block signals of pain, restoring a healthier balance.
We infuse ketamine intravenously and esketamine AKA Spravato is taken intranasally. We provide ketamine intravenously because the IV route of administration (ROA) offers a number of safety and efficacy advantages. Please schedule a call with us to discuss the pros and cons of both treatment options.
Concerns
Patients commonly feel tired or groggy after an infusion. This usually subsides completely after a full night of sleep. Some patients experience mild nausea after an infusion, especially those prone to motion sickness. If you are prone to nausea, we can administer anti nausea medicine before the infusion to help prevent it. Additionally, patients who experience nausea after an infusion usually feel much better after we provide additional anti nausea medicine. Side effects usually dissipate within a few hours and are usually completely gone by the following day. There are no known long-term side effects of IV Ketamine Infusion Therapy when administered by a responsible clinician in a medical setting.
We do not require a referral or prescription from a psychiatrist or other physician. We do require speaking with another clinician who has managed the condition for which you are seeking treatment. This is to confirm your diagnosis, learn more about you, and personalize your treatment plan. The clinician can be a psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, general practitioner, or pain specialist. All patients are encouraged to engage in talk therapy and implement positive lifestyle changes.
